Let us Proudly Commemorate International Year of Small Scale Fisheries & Aquiculture - 2022

An alternative Media unit for fishr people's movement

National Fisheries Solidarity Movement (NAFSO) Trained a Alternative journalist group with 31 youths from 25th August to 27, 2008 at NAFSO's Training center in Negombo and the objective of organizing this programme to build an Alternative Media Unit all over the country against this prevailing autocratic media system which had been spreaded very widely in the society.

Though the people were thirsting for the good news, it's very rarely we can listen such a news because most of journalists are going behind the politicians in the country and they have been becoming personnel political news reporters.

We selected 31youths from 12 districts including Eastern province (Ampara and Trincomalee districts.) for running this seasonable event to launch an alternative news paper with an Essence and they will become alternative journalists working voluntarily to give a voice for voiceless communities in the country. All participated youths were member of the YOUTH MOVEMENT FOR BETTER SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE.

A valid certificate also offered for these alternative journalists, who successfully completed the three day's media training having signed by Mr. Herman Kumara, National Convener of National Fisheries solidarity Movement and Mrs. Geetha Luckmini Fernando, Administrative Secretary. After completing the training they agreed to work as a family of alternative Journalists and raise our voice against this injustice media culture.

Poddala Jayantha, general secretary of the Sri Lanka Working Journalists Association, Gnanasiri Koththigoda chief editor of the Sinhala monthly Haraya (meaning Essence), and the BBC Reporter gave us their great service voluntarily as facilitators of the programme to make this a success.
