Celebrated World Fisheries Day in 21st November 2008 was a stage for small scale fishermen around the country to raise their voices to draw an attention from responsible authorities in the country.
More than 1200 of fishers, farmers, labours and youth groups gathered at Thalawila church marching about three 3KM with vast posters banners, and slogans at the rally.
Ending the rally all people got together to celebrate the World Fisheries Day at Thalawila church.
The main demands of the rally
Stop illegal fishing gears.
Don’t promote unsustainable tourism
allow fishermen to access to the sea
Mr. Herman Kumara was the chief guest at the WFD as he is the General Secretary of WFFP and the National Convener of National Fisheries Solidarity Movement. And the Admin secretary of NAFSO Mrs. Geetha Luckmini Fernando also addressed the rally.
