Northern Fisheries issues voiced out

Border issues arose due to surpassing of SL – EEZ by Indian trawlers and grabbing of fisheries resources have been reduced due to unsuitable climatic condition and collaborative struggle of Sri Lankan fishers. But they will come back by September after conditions are suitable, these facts reviled on several discussions conduct with northern fishers during a visit of NAFSO team led by national convener to North on 14th and 15th of June.

And also fishers noted that, as this is national issue, all fishers must work together to reach sustainable solution.

Fishers coming from other areas of SL and grabbing of voluble fish resources in North Sea,

Breaking of corporative based fisher rights by security forces.

Extensive use of illegal fishing gears

Banning of beach seine fishery to northern fishers while allow to intruders from south and lack of loan scheme for the benefit of fishers to restart their jobs are the other major issues faced by fishers according to information gathered from two meetings conducted in Kilinochchi and jaffna peninsula.

They needed their freedom of doing job as privileged by southern fishers and social security should establish removing military authority prevailed area so far.
