NAFSO World Fisheries Day Celebration


NAFSO celebrated ‘World Fisheries Day’ in Matara under the theme of “Let us build peace and harmony while ensuring rights of fishers in a democratic space’ on the 9th of November 2019. Mr.Herman Kumara, convener of NAFSO, Professor Oscar Amarasingha of University of Ruhuna, Parliamentarian Mr. Sunil Handunnethi, Janatha Vimukkthiperamuna, and Mr.Vimukkthi Silva from MONLA participated for this occasion.  

Mr. L.Y. Wasantha, district coordinator, Matara conducted the welcome speech. Buddist, Hindu, Islam and Catholic priests conducted the religious activities and the Youth team of Matara district conducted the opening cultural event.
Mr. N. Kamalasiri, a representative of Sothern Fisheries Society conducted a presentation on ‘Challengers of Fisheries Industry and the expectations of fishers’ Mrs. Padmawathi from Baticaloa district conducted a presentation on ‘Women’s role in Social Development sector, followed by a presentation of Mr. Herman Kumara.  
Presentation of invitees was conducted by Parliamentarian Mr. Hadunnetthi. Two research reports on ‘Negative impact of Migration fishing in the Northern Province’ and the other one on Argo- Ecology were then launched at the ceremony. Mr. karunasingha of Praja Sahayogitha Sansadaya  Polpithigama- Kurunegala  delivered his speech on importance of protecting the rights of farmers and inland fisher people.
