Fish net sales center for inland fishers


A fishing net sales center was opened for inland fishers who are living in Angamuwa Village. Angamuwa is located in Anuradhapura district in North Central Province, Sri Lanka. This center was opened by Angamuwa Fisheries Cooperative Society on 27th March 2009 with the help of Karuwalagaswewa Prajashakthi Development Foundation which is working as NAFSO’s partner organization.

Prajashakthi Development Foundation has been working with inland fisher groups building their community in the district and also anytime they were helped providing information and conducting trainings on fisheries management in the tank.

According to a request of fishermen, NAFSO allocated Rs.213, 000.00 to open this sales center. Mainly this fund was allocated to spend for buying necessary (basic) nets and other equipments which use in the tank in fishing. Before opening this sales center, the fishers used to spend much money on these fish nets and other equipments when they bought these equipments from out side sales centers.

“First of all we would like to thank NAFSO for helping us to build this center. Now we can manage this well providing nets and equipments to fishermen with a seasonable price and actually, we will not be exploited by middlemen any further to.” W. K. Chaminda Kumara, inland fishermen.

Under the Alternative Economic Development Programme of NAFSO, this project was funded and this will be monitored by NAFSO’s partner organization Prajashakthi Development Foundation and the especial committee was formed on behalf of developing this sales center in the district.

“We don’t need to go behind anyone to buy fish nets and equipments because now we have a our own place to buy what we need and hope to develop this center in the future for providing nets with cheapest price to our fishermen.” committee member , Smansiri Weerabhanu added at the end of the opening ceremony.
