Feb 15, Colombo: Fishermen in several areas in Sri Lanka staged protests today resulting in the closure of some fish markets in the country. One of the key fish markets that were closed today according to local media reports was the Negombo fish market.
The protests were held in Negombo, Chilaw, Galle and Jaffna to mark the second death anniversary of Anthony, who was killed while participating in a protest organized by the fishermen against the increase in fuel prices.
Anthony was shot and killed during a protest in Chilaw in 2012 when the police opened fire to disperse the protesters.
The Action Committee of Integrated Fishermen's Association organized a conference in Chilaw at 1.30 p.m. to mark the death anniversary.
The fishermen in Negombo have refrained from fishing due to the protest and a protest was also staged at 3.00 p.m. in Chilaw with the participation of Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe.
