According to conclusions of a research conducted on small-scale fisheries sector, covering the coastal belt between Negombo to Chilaw by National Aquatic Resources Research and Development (NARA) only less than 1% of fishers have responded as "no any objection in do fishing by their next generation".
Fisheries resources are depleting due to unsustainable fishing methods and use of destructive gears. especially bottom trawling. Political authorities are making policies but no use as the fishers who users such gears are backed by politicians themselves.
