The country has made the right pick in appointing Professor Oscar Amarasinghe as the first Chancellor of the Ocean University of Sri Lanka. With his vast knowledge in the field of fisheries social sciences, and long experience and strong working links with international agencies such as the FAO and the World Bank, and other academic and research actors in the field of small scale fisheries governance and management, the choice made by the government to appoint Professor Oscar Amarasinghe as the head of the Ocean University needs to be commended. He has served this country as a honorable and venerated teacher accredited for his humanity, and pioneered the process of development of the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Ruhuna from its inception, to its present state. Gifted with multiple talents, he presided the Southern Motor Sports Club and was a well-known rally driver, a painter and a musician.
