FAIR AND SUSTAINABLE TEA VALUE CHAIN, REPORT LAUNCHING AND ROUND TABLE DISCUSSION - 06 DECEMBER 2022

South Asia Alliance for Poverty Eradication (SAAPE), National Fisheries Solidarity Movement (NAFSO), and Up-country Social Research Centre jointly organised a report launching event followed by a round table discussion titled “Plight of Tea Plantation Workers and Smallholder Farmers in South Asia” on 6 December 2022. The event was attended by 45 participants.

Sudhir Shrestha from SAAPE presented the findings based on the report “Plight of Tea Plantation Workers and Smallholders Farmers in South Asia”. Specifically, he raised the issues of minimum wage in tea sector not being in par with the wage in other sectors and social security provisions not being provided to workers on time. While he discussed the growing informalisation of work in plantation of sector that has resulted in subsequent reduction in the responsibility of tea estates and increased difficulty in organising workers, he called for the need to ensure living wage and social protection for workers, an end to women discrimination and gender injustice, enforcement of the provisions stated in laws and making worker-friendly reforms in labour legislations, and granting land rights to plantation workers, among others.
